How can Acupuncture help an animal being neutered? by Dr Alison Grimston
publication date: Jan 17, 2009
Acupuncture
is the use of fine needles to help unblock energy or chi
(Qi) flow. When an animal has been neutered, its hormones are changing
rapidly. This can give the animal a feeling of confusion, and
communicators are sometimes aware that the animal becomes anxious as it
loses part of its sense of identity. Often a stallion that is neutered
later in life seems confused, although it may ultimately be happier as
its lifestyle is less restricted.
Some
of the effects of Acupuncture:
- There is an increase in natural hormones in the blood
stream that promote wellness, and reduce stress, pain and depression.
- The patient feels relaxed and contented, allowing its self
healing
to engage more readily. This can improve wound repair after surgery.
- The appetite may be improved, which may promote
post-operative healing.
- There may be a feeling of increased energy levels and less
post-operative lethargy.
- Certain nerves may be stimulated to promote wellbeing and
beneficial hormone release.
- Pain relief is common, and acupuncture is even used as
anaesthetic for major operations in some countries.
In the
UK and USA, all animal acupuncture has to be done by a trained veterinary
surgeon. Always ask the opinion of your vet when you suspect ill health
in your pet and use complementary therapies in combination with the
suggestions of your vet.

It is undoubtable that neutering is stressful for animals, and acupuncture can help in several different ways.
